PostSubject: Desktop Advice...   Desktop Advice... EmptyTue Nov 13, 2012 9:08 pm

Hopefully I'll be getting a new PC for Christmas (fingers crossed) and I have built one on a website.
Specs:
4.2GHz AMD FX-4170 4-Core CPU £129.99
AMD ATI Radeon HD 7770 1GB Graphics Card £105.99
8GB Transcend 1333MHz RAM £32.99
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Motherboard £47.99
Xigmatek 500W PSU £34.99

It also comes with 1TB HDD, Win7 and a case + it's all built for ya.
Aiming to keep it under £600 tops. Current setup brings it to £557.91 which is still a bit dear.

I wanted to ask, will this spec run games such as BF3 and ARMA2 on medium (at least) no AA on a 1366x768 resolution screen?

And any opinions on the hardware? I'm keeping to a reasonably tight budget since it's my money I'm spending (:S) so I can't spend it all.

i think its a pretty good specs for bf3 and other hardcore games. it should be enough, other people would know more about AMD proccesor than me.

Gold, if you don't know, don't comment...... anyways, that processor is more than capable, and the graphics card should be too. However, try to get faster RAM, like 1600Mhz, and make sure the chipset on the motherboard matches the processor chipset, and make sure it has the right slot for the graphics card. Also (in case you want to compare graphics cards) go here: http://community.futuremark.com/hardware/gpu

Well I used this for GFX comparison http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU12/372
The motherboard has the same AM3+ socket as the AMD processor
If I upgraded the RAM slightly then it would bring it nearer to 600 which would make the purchase less feasible as much as I want to. There is some Corsair Vengeance RAM but it costs more, and basically I just need RAM for the sake of having RAM Razz
The 7770 should be able to play BF3 on Ultra quality on 1920x1200 so it should be fine for a smaller screen on Ultra. It's enough for me to use I think.
The motherboard has 1 PCIe x16 slot and a couple others so I can have one but no SLI or Crossfire I don't think (not that I'll need it).
Anyway, if you think anything needs altering then tell me Razz

Spoke to my Dad about it, he's worked with computers for years.

CPU-steer clear of the FX ones, it says 4 core, but it's 2 effectively, you're better off with a good phenom or an Intel i5, even if they are more expensive, they are worth it, but you would need to change the motherboard.

GPU-Go for at least 2048mb, and 7770s aren't that great, a high 6000 might be better or a 7850 would be much better , but probably not great for your budget.

PSU-This is definitely not something to go cheap on. Make sure you get a good brand, anyone will say how you shouldn't get a cheap one. Get a Corsair or similar

Hope this helps

If i remember correctly, the new FX series processors run hot too (i may be wrong) so you might need heavier cooling than just fans, and Death is right...... but you could go all out and get the 8-core XD

If you'd like, tomorrow I can see if I can find a good pc build with as best specs as possible for around £500-550. Just so you know, RAM at 1333 is almost no feasible difference too 1600 unless you get a really good pair. Even that isn't huge.

Oh boy.
Well the Dual Core i3 ivy bridge @3.3GHz is the same price, unlocked too!
The next PSU up is a £78.99 Corsair Gamer Series GS600 80+ 600W PSU which brings my price over 600 :S (and 600 was a push anyway)
I personally thought the graphics card was alright. I'm looking some up now and the contenders are: GTX 550ti 1GB and a 7770 GHz Edition 2GB which is £139.99
The 7850 was in contention but too expensive for my budget since I will need an OS too.
I don't really see why the 7770 is that bad though.
Anyway, I've found a 2GB 7850 for £147.99 so I think that's reasonable but I will need to make some sacrifices somewhere in order to stick to my budget of £600

It's a laptop. I'm already on a laptop and I'm confined to the parts on the damn thing.
I don't like laptops for gaming at all.

I want a budget desktop that can be able to run BF3 at a resolution of 1366x768 or a bit bigger, at least on Low at a reasonable FPS i.e. ~40 fps
I would like a decent processor and graphics card but if I spend more on one, I will have to end up sacrificing on another.

So please, if you have any ideas, try and keep it in my £600 budget.
It doesn't have all the parts listed above, so keep in mind that what's there isn't all of it.

May be refurbished and may need some upgrading over time but an intel i7, 1.5 TB and also Win 7 for 450 is just an insanely good price. Hopefully I'll just get this and slowly upgrade Razz

I would go for that 'Beauty' ninja. Sometimes things like that are hard to upgrade as they are manufacturer specific to some things. Case size for example. My brother had this problem which we didn't foresee.

http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/system/Cyberpower_Z77_configurator/

I hope this link works properly. This is a very good site for building PC's on.

This is what I put in, what the price outcome is.

i5 3570 Processor. (very powerful, won't need to upgrade in a while)
Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H Intel Z77 Chipset
8GB RAM at 1600 Mhz Dual Channel
AMD 7770 GPU (Don't know much on this AMD type. I am an nVidia guy Razz)
500 Watt PSU (It gives a guide on the left hand side of what it'll need)

From this site, it will cost you : £594.

Now I know this is the top limit but feel free to play around with things, make things cheaper ect. Processor can be downgraded a bit if you are willing to get around 40fps. Try and aim for 60 fps though, you will notice a difference.

Use this website to gain a kind of limit/benchmark of each CPU or GPU.

That sight is very deceptive, the big price on the left may be big and red, but it's £594 excluding VAT. And VAT my friend is an arse.

Anyway, I've been looking at stuff on Scan but all that means is I'll have to build it myself :S although they are pretty cheap.

I know people who could possibly build it for me (friends n' stuff) so I'd probably do that. It's just a matter of getting the right parts which will fit my needs and budget.

Also, what's so bad about AMD?

I recommend that you go with a Intel processor instead of an AMD one. They tend to heat up quite fast. I suggest the i5-3450. I have it and its pretty good. And also see if you can upgrade the HD7770 to HD6850 or the HD 6870. There's a lot of difference. Way better FPS and overall graphics. Tried them all out, bought the 6870. Rest all seems fine. Should be good to play BF3 and such games. Very Happy Very Happy

Please, the pictures make my screen go mega wide.

And this costs too much, I told you my budget was £600 as an absolute top and I told you, that was already at a push.

I can't assemble a computer by myself and it's a lot of hassle, especially something during christmas time.

Make the text smaller.

Also, what is bad with an AMD processor? That it gets a bit hot? Have any of you had personal experience with one? I mean the 8 core AMD seems pretty good for the price, it gives me more money to spend elsewhere like on a 660 ti for instance.

SO PLEASE, KEEP THE BUDGET IN MIND. MY PARENTS ARE ASIAN.

Mister Asian, sorry for big text, because default text looks to small on my full hd monitor. And picture seems alright. Ok then. I just received some offer from scan.co.uk today via email. So about dis:
Desktop Advice... Exclusive

+ GTX 660 I mentioned before, + same PSU cx600

Total is 549 QUID, you still have 50 quid left for your HDD or case.

AMD CPU just NO, Intel is leading in CPU. And it is better Intel with NVidia cards.

And jeez, computer assembling doesn't take 10 hours. + you are Asian. Not bad one, I hope Very Happy
