Ok These are simple little thing that can help the everyday gamer. Its important to have certain things updated for smooth game play, media, etc...
1.Check microsoft update and make sure you have all the updates for your pc, Click the start menu and all programs and its there you will see it Windows or Microsoft update depending on if your running xp vista or Window 7
2. Direct X updates :
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35 download this its web installer for direct x run it direct X updated
3. Visual C++ Redistributable 2010 :
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=14632 this updates your C++ Runtime lybraries Note: there x86 and 64 bit versions for 2005...2008..& 2010 its good to have them all but windows update gives you the ones you need. You want the 64 bit for 64 bit and the X86 is for 32 bit systems so if your running a 32 bit system you only want the 32 bit version here :

4. Updating Punkbuster :
http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php download the on for windows and you have to unzip it here use winrar its always been reliable :
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm this is to unzip the files. OK.. just unzip and create a folder named PunkBuster and unzip the pb to that folder ... place that folder into C:/Program Files/Punkbuster or C:/Program Files (x86)/Punkbuster for 64 bit operating systems right click the PBSETUP file and create a shortcut on the desktop. open the pb add your games that apply ... update.
5. Update Video Card Drivers:
NVIDIA:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us its simple drop down list or you can have them scan your pc find what you need ...trust me if you know what you have manual is better
ATI:
http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/downloads.aspx just get the catalyst suit its the bigger download make sure you get the right one XP, Vista, Windows 7 32bit / 64 bit etc...
Intel Chip Set (for most Lptops or onbord Video Cards)
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/6. Windows/Microsoft updates: depending on what O.S. you are running just make sure you have all the updates.
7. Ccleaner:
http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER this is a free program that has some nice tools in it for fixing the registry, startup programs manager, disk cleanup, browser setings for firefox I explorer, and google chrome. Its realy good program free and trusted by many Universitys across the country
8. Defrag: Now Windows 7 has a nice defrag program built in.but I use Smart

http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html this prgram is nice it defrags optomizes ..but the feture I like the most is it Defrags ther registry and all the files thats are being used while windows is running..it realy gives you a defragemented hard drive
