PostSubject: Recommendations for new laptop?   Recommendations for new laptop? EmptySun Feb 26, 2012 7:16 pm

Move into another forum if you must, but I'd like to get as many views and as much help as I can.

Recommendations for a new laptop anyone? I want to run multiple programs with ease, including somewhat heavy software like Photoshop and video editing software. No modern gaming considerations.

General specs should be:

Less than $450 without additional warranty, etc
2.0 GHz + processor
3GB + RAM (would consider buying more RAM to expand it)
250GB + HDD
Windows 7, but NOT Basic/Starter
14 inch + screen (15.6 is perfect)
6 cell battery is a plus
Good reviews
Prefer NOT to be Acer
Refurb maybe, looking at New mostly
Also looking for good ADH warranties -_-

I would recommend Dell then, good prices and decent systems. Semi custom build possible Smile

Seems like Dell is too expensive on their site and I'd never pay for XPS or Alienware. Overpowered junk.

Since I can't post up links yet... boo. Google these up. Click Newegg, should be the first one on the list.

If you can get around it being an "Acer" then this is pretty much what you're asking for with a budget of $430, free shipping, and 4/5 stars.
Spoiler:

This one is $440, free shipping, with 4 stars review. Its asus but the drawback is that it only has a 4 cell battery.
Spoiler:

Anyway if my suggestions don't interest you just go on newegg and use the advanced search, you'll definitely find what you're looking for.

And I can definitely give my word that the whole shipping thing isn't bad. I've bought three laptops off new egg as well as parts for a new desktop. They're reliable and not one part came broken. And punctual.

Happy Shopping... Smile

Well, I've bought some Vostro laptops. They are pretty cheap.
Wouldn't look for much other models with a tight budget.

Spoiler:

I've already compared that to this one: http://bby.us/?c=BB009904601974

I figure this 15.6" Best Buy once is better with the 0.1GHz more processor speed and i3 core rather than Pentium. Plus the cache is 1MB larger. A couple dollars cheaper than Newegg after Best Buy's S&H and tax.

There is an second decent BB laptop as well, $20 cheaper and with a larger 500GB HDD, but its a 14" so thats a tiny bit smaller for my liking. I'll only use 100-200GB anyway. (http://bby.us/?c=BB009903672031)

One thing I wonder about, Newegg mentions "Manufacturer Warranty - Accidental Damage Warranty - 1 Year Accidental Damage/30-Day Zero Bright Dot" I wonder if that Accidental part also applies to models sold at Best Buy?

Well what do you think out of these 3 guys?

I think I found your next laptop friend...

Google this up, first hit should be from new egg.
Spoiler:

Price wise... it is $405 with free shipping. Originally it was 500!

Some key things about it.
2.4 GHz i3 (you saw this on your BB one and it has a 3MB cache better than what i originally suggested)
15.6" screen
500gb hard drive
4gb RAM With potential to be upgraded to 8gb
6 cell battery
Windows 7 64bit
4 star rating

so...
Less than $450 without additional warranty, etc check
2.0 GHz + processor check
3GB + RAM (would consider buying more RAM to expand it) check
250GB + HDD check
Windows 7, but NOT Basic/Starter check
14 inch + screen (15.6 is perfect) check
6 cell battery is a plus check
Good reviews check
Prefer NOT to be Acer check
Refurb maybe, looking at New mostly - Hmm. lol
Also looking for good ADH warranties -_- - I'm not sure about this, it might...

But yea I think this one is a good choice. (Buy it Buy it! You're saving 100 bucks and getting more than you asked for)

Saw that... I'm concerned about the warranty though. I can get a 3yr policy with accidental protection for a new laptop for $100 but the refurb is only 1yr, no accident protection, $60ish. The free warranty is only 90 days too vs 1 year.

Honestly I'm not sure to get a warranty at all... high cost for something you may never use. I guess if something ever happens just take it to a shop and hope the repair costs aren't too much more than the warranty?

Plus I could attempt to get repairs on my old one... over $200 I think.

a 100.00 warrenty on a 400.00 computer?? why? on a 2400.00 computer sure but not on a 400.00. just my two cents worth. even if say in two and a half years you toast it and they replace it for free you still have a 400.00 computer with two and a half year old technology in it.( actually it would most likely only be worth oh about 100.00)

Most electronics, especially laptops (and phones and mobile devices especially) are made to become obsolete in a few years time. Planned obsolescence is the driving force to consumerism basically or else they wouldn't be able to constantly sell stuff.

Personally for me I look at laptops having a lifespan of around 5 years. By then they'd have come out with a new model that has some new feature that I need or my laptop would have gone out.

I've never let a warranty affect my purchasing tbh, because I'm so careful with my electronics. (I kept the plastic protector on my laptop screen for around a year after I bought it). If you're sure that you won't do anything stupid with your laptop, what is there to worry about? If you're concerned that the product may come damaged in the mail I think their return policy would cover it. But other than that... it all comes down to how you treat your toys.

But lets just say a few years down the line you break it, are you really going to repair it? for whatever amount just to extend the life of your laptop... what... 2 more years? and having to endure not having the newest model of it... Idk. 500 dollars every 5 years is pretty good if you ask me.

tl;dr: idgaf about warranties! lol

I recommend an asus. I got one and ituns like a dream. Problem is all good gaming PCs cost at least half a grand. Perhaps you should concider building your own PC. With the best parts it can be better than an Alienware for less than half the price.

Alright, I guess F the warranty.

What about this refurb?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157719

Same model is $50 less at "CedarPC"

Well rated store on google, ever heard of em?

Wow! That laptop looks great for the price! Either way you're saving 200 bucks lol. I say go for it, but be a bit cautious when you get it, make sure everything works and keep receits proof of purchase on hand just incase there was something to that "refurbish" tag.

As for cedarpc, I actually have no experience with that site so I couldn't tell you. Sad
The reviews when I search on the internet for them are a bit... varied. I suggest you research into the company before trusting a few hundred to them. Low prices seems a bit suspicious too....

Yeah I don't know if a $50 discount is worth the gamble at "cedarPC".

As for the HP model at newegg, it beats that Samsung you posted earlier Smile and it has 2 reviews, a 4* and a 5* unlike the Samsung with its mysterious 0 ratings. lol.
