Modern Warfare 3 Tops $1 Billion in 16 Days

If there's one thing Activision wants people to know, it's that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been hugely successful. The publisher released press releases touting the game as the biggest launch in entertainment history after a single day on shelves, and then again after five days. Today, Activision echoed the sentiment once more, saying that Modern Warfare 3 reached $1 billion faster than any other entertainment property, needing just 16 days on sale.

Modern Warfare 3 has toppled Avatar, so what's left to take aim at?
The publisher said the "fastest to $1 billion" title was previously held by James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster Avatar. That film reached the milestone on its 17th day of release.

Beyond the fastest-selling claim, Activision also said the Call of Duty community has swollen to 30 million gamers, and pointed out that the number is larger than the combined populations of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris, and Madrid. The newly launched Call of Duty Elite service is not quite so sizable, with a total membership of 6 million players, of which 1 million are paying subscribers.

Activision said its shooter franchise is "now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the National Football League that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release."

Activision is/has been rolling in the money for years now. If they could only put a fraction of that into dedicated servers they could fix one of the biggest problems..lag.

Yeah, the lag is horrendous.

Or maybe even listen to some of the input the gaming community has, lol.

$1 billion? That's like 16 million copies if all were $60 each. That's already slightly more than half what BlackOps sold (25 mil) since release last November. To think that it has been just only 16 days.

I never have a problem with lag on MW3 but for a while it was the only game crashing my computer. It probably took me a week to realize that the same thing happened with BO due to the games cache becoming fragmented like a mofo. Quick and easy fix. I still haven't played this game on a console though, you don't wanna know how bad I am with a controller xP

There's been several lobbies with "lag-switchers" that basically give the host connection to the opposition and leave your team with a one or two bar connection. It's frustrating but it doesn't happen all the time.

Anyone who's played COD multiplayer knows that there is a definite advantage when you're the host. Bullets seem to always land their mark and you seem to just be a tiny bit faster than the opposition. If only we played in a COD world with dedicated servers than a good amount of players wouldn't have to deal with the lag of the hosting system.

+1 Derek. They need to make dedicated servers for once... and fix the bug that gives the person with the worst connection host. -.-

Dedicated servers are a thing of the past. So are free patches. So is non linear game play. So is innovation. /rage

Not surprising at all Not even with MW3's price (well bf3 too) being cut in half after like a week.

It's just the consumers need to buy the next Version of a game that been so popular the last decade, can't blame them cus im one of those consumers

I have to say this game yet again did not deserve the money. Call Of Duty 4 was still the best in the series. World At War was good, MW2 was trash, Black Ops was good and this was actually pretty good only because of the survival mode. Multiplayer was unbalanced, the singleplayer was the same as last time (only three points in the game interested me), Spec Ops was okay (better than the trash in MW2), but the survival was the best survival the series has seen. It was well done, fast paced, and fun.

Just my opinion on the game.

Where was it being cut in half? All retail stores still have it at $59.99 if I'm not mistaken.
