Ghost Recon Online (GRO)

7/7/11 Update

Ghost Recon Online (GRO) will be a third-person shooter set sometime in the near-future with modern super soldier, advanced technology, and intelligence. There is nothing as of yet explaining the depth of how super, advanced, or intelligent. The game will offer 8v8 multiplayer matches and a number of different game modes, one of them being Domination explained a little bit later on. GRO will be hosted on dedicate servers as well. It focuses on the tactics of team combat and strategy. UbiSoft claims the graphics will be on par that of consoles however, some believe it not to be quite as polished. They will include microtransactions in which you can purchase premium items and abilities but, you'll need to unlock them first with points gained from playing.

More and more video games are starting to jump into the Free-2-Play concept and UbiSoft is the next one. GRO PC release date is in the second half of 2011. It will also be released for the new and upcoming Wii U console in 2012. As some of you Ghost Recon fans may have noticed, Ghost Recon has been, as of late, geared towards and made for the console even though it started out on PCs. UbiSoft is bringing it back to PC trying to reclaim their fanbase with this release. Although there are some debates in what the Wii U version will offer vs PC since Nintendo has never involved itself in Free-2-Play.

Players can sign up for the beta test now and will be notified with it starts.


Classes
The classes consist of Assault, Snipers, and Specialists. The Assault class boosts armor for nearby teammates and has a special move where he whips out a shield and rushes forward in a berserker charge, Recon extends the range of intel (highlighting enemy locations), and Specialist replenishes ammo.

Mulitplayer Mode
Domination mode, is designed to create blockade points where one team has control of an area and is able to set up a perimeter.

There’s no server browser, but there is a party system to let you play with friends. The game’s lobby has social chat features and leaderboards.


Point System
GRO includes both in-game and post-game points system. The points tally favor those who work as a team to capture objectives. It gives considerably more points for capturing and defending locations than for killing people. There are also some added bonuses for party play, which is sticking with your friends from game to game.

Character Level and Bonuses
GRO has a persistent character system with a level 50 experience cap. Earning levels unlocks new items (armor, clothes, weapons, weapon mods, grenade types) which you then buy with in-game cash earned from playing well. Every match also ends with a loot drop. This randomized drop can net you cool things. The better you do in a match, the more points you earn, the higher the chance of good loot.

Microtransactions
Ubisoft promises there are no tricks or hooks to "force" you into microtransactions. While it's not clear of all the things money can buy you in GRO, one thing it won't earn you is an advantage on the battleground. Real-world cash can only buy items you've unlocked. If you don't want to wait to earn in-game cash for a new scope, you can drop some real bills down instead. Or you can buy some cooler-looking versions of items. But none of it gives you any real advantage that you can't earn by playing the game.


Conclusion
Although it seems UbiSoft is not bringing anything new to the Free-2-Play arena, besides graphics, items, abilities, and style, it is another installment of Ghost Recon for those long awaiting PC GR fans. A game, judging by some gameplay videos, that seems to be halfway between Call of Duty and Battlefield in terms of battle speed.

PS: On side note, UbiSoft has confirmed GR: Future Soldier Beta will start Jan 2012.

Oh man I just read the fine print. You say its coming out in January 2012? That's half a year from now Well, I'll still be looking forward to it. Right now I need a rig or console that'll run BF3 and MW3.

Well from the gameplay videos, it looks very well put together for a f2p. And a good emphasis on team work with the classes. And yeah, a closed beta f2p doesn't take that long before it goes into open beta ...unless your battlefield p4f

i have iv played graw2 first ps3 game i got back in 05

Ubisoft have clarified the Ghost Recon Online Beta Sign Up process in our GR:O forums stating that confirmation e-mails to beta applicants are currently only going out to EU gamers. In the US, although your application will be logged, you will currently not recieve a confirmation e-mail.
