| Hello, PaddieBear here! And I have a problem: Every time I want too run a .exe field or a program that needs administrative permission, I type in my password using User Account Control but instead of just letting me through it come with this error: Logon failure: unknown username or bad password. I've searched for fixes but haven't found one that works. This has been a very big problem as I am a Computer gamer and all the games I have, have the administrative sign (Shield) and or are .exe files. This has been going on for around 3 or 4 months now...It really is getting on my nerves. Since there is no way to shut off User Account Control (UAC) without opening UAC itself....I really am desperate just so you know I'm running on Vista. For further detail just ask me! And by the way thanks for your help and suggestions Also I'm running on a: Manufacturer: Acer Model: Aspire M1201 Processor: AMD(tm) 8550 Triple-Core Processor 2.20 GHz Memory (RAM): 3.00 GB System Type: 32-bit Operating System I do not have administrative priviliges, as when I try to login with my password it says the same thing. I recently changed my password on my second account which was standard, and it won't let me login anymore with the same error for my admin account. I'm now on my last and will NEVER change my password. Please help me! |

| Well...maybe I should've mentioned this. But my computer cannot really recegonize CDs or run them. My computer is in an absolutely terrible position.
I"m more worried about being able to run programs then gett my CD drive fixed though.
Yep I just made matters more complicated. |

| Fit a fresh DVD Drive or beg, borrow or Ebay an external USB DVD Drive. Open the BIOS and make sure Boot from USB or DVD is first in the boot options then do these steps :
1. Boot from Windows RE and access the command prompt. You can start Windows RE by booting the Windows Vista or Windows 7 setup DVD and then selecting “Repair” instead of “Install Windows.” 2. Find the drive letter of the partition where Windows is installed. In Vista and Windows XP, it is usually C:, in Windows 7, it is D: in most cases because the first partition contains Startup Repair. To find the drive letter, type C: (or D:, respectively) and search for the Windows folder. Note that Windows PE (RE) usually resides on X:. 3. Type the following command (replace “c:” with the correct drive letter if Windows is not located on C:):
copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\
This creates a copy of sethc.exe to restore later. 4. Type this command to replace sethc.exe with cmd.exe:
copy /y c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe 5. Reboot your computer and start the Windows installation where you forgot the administrator password. 6. After you see the logon screen, press the SHIFT key five times. 7. You should see a command prompt where you can enter the following command to reset the Windows password (see screenshot above):
net user you_user_name new_password
If you don’t know your user name, just type net user to list the available user names. 8. You can now log on with the new password.

| Glad to be of help, if that doesn't work (which might take a few tries) then pm me with the results you get and I'll give you some more complex hacks. This however is the last port of call before likely destroying your Windows install. |

| You might also try reseting the password through the 'control userpassword2' command through the run prompt. I know this works in XP and pretty sure it works in Vista as well. |
