13th MEU YouTube Channel Set Up Written by: 1st Lt. Spino Prime
As many of you will know by now (due to the fact that it scrolls across the screen on just about every web page on the site), we have a YouTube playlist containing videos that feature the clan and our members. However, many users have requested that we have a full channel dedicated to the clan, but up until now, the extra work and problems didn’t seem worth the potential gains. However we have managed to figure out solutions for most, if not all the problems and now our channel can be seen at: http://youtube.13thmeu.net
Before the main issues were the fact that we did not have a reliable way of moving files from the user to an uploader with channel access, this has been solved however, with Dropbox. Which offers us 3 GB of online storage for our users to upload their videos to, without having to deal with unreliable file hosters such as Megaupload, or Filefront or email (which is not suited for sending large files like videos). This way, we could implement a system allowing our users to upload videos directly to our Dropbox from a webpage, without the need to sign up for any account. It is a pretty neat system that works rather well in the testing preformed; however, there is one caveat. Due to the fact that this public upload is provided by another site, we have a 76.8 MB limit on the file size, which isn’t ideal, but if your video is larger, go further down for advice on how to fit it in.
Another issue we had was with uploaders, who should have access to the YouTube channel. This issue is not completely solved, but for now Spino Prime will be the only one who can access the Dropbox and upload videos to the Youtube Channel.
The last main issue was that the clan did not seem to have an official email address to sign up for these services with. it turns out though that Endrane had one set up perfectly for us to use.
What do we gain from having a YouTube channel instead of a playlist? A few things, the main one being the big yellow Subscribe button. With a playlist it can be difficult to keep track of when videos are added, due to the lack of a subscription feature for playlists. Now though, anyone who is interested in seeing the latest gameplay from 13th MEU and its members, can subscribe so that they are notified when we get new videos up.
We also get a much larger ability to customize and theme with a channel then with our previous playlist. As you can already see, the current YouTube channel was themed to match the colour scheme used by our website.
You may have noticed that the YouTube page looks a little empty, that’s because we need YOU, to upload videos for us to use. How you may ask, well just go to: http://upload.13thmeu.net This page will allow you to choose the videos that you want to upload, and send them to us. Make sure to send us any cool gameplay or practises that you have recorded that you think other 13th members may be interested to see. There are some rules to what you can and can’t upload those being:
You can Upload: Gameplay (games that the clan play is preferred) Programs or applications made for the 13th MEU Other game related content (for example, we could possibly do video reviews or previews, if anyone is interested in putting them together)
You can NOT Upload: Porn Viruses Anything that is NOT a video file Video files that have not been exported and therefore can only be opened in the corresponding video editor Videos of you or other 13th members hacking/ cheating/ glitching online
Any files that do not follow these rules will be immediately deleted and will not be put up on our channel.
All the videos from the previous YouTube playlist have been added to a new playlist on the new channel entitled “13th Video Archive”. Due to the fact that we do not own the rights or the content in these videos, we may not re upload them onto our channel, so they have been added to the playlist in order to keep these videos available for viewing. You can find this new playlist on the new channel. The previous playlist hosted on my personal channel has been deleted, and thus cannot be accessed anymore.
I understand that you may have longer videos that may exceed the 76.8 MB limit and thus have some tips to get the video to the correct size: - Compress the video using an archiver such as Winrar or 7zip. This could help cut down on a few MB in some cases. - Render/convert the movie to a different format. AVI files take up a massive amount of space. Converting it to a WMV may help you stay inside the limit. - Split the video up into multiple parts and upload each part. I can either put the video back together near the time of upload, or upload each of the pieces up to the Channel. That way you can take a 120 MB video, split it in half, and have two 60 MB videos that can be uploaded.
If you don’t have videos to submit but you would still like to help out. There is still a way for you to help out. Uploading videos depends on our Dropbox account. And while 3 GB of storage space for our videos is nice, it is always better to have more space. If you have not already, sign up for Dropbox using this address: http://dropbox.13thmeu.net Signing up though this address will give as an additional 256 MB of space to use for our video needs. Also, if anyone has a spare .edu email address or a Facebook/Twitter account we can use to increase our space that would be highly appreciated.
So get out there and record some of your awesome gaming moments, we need all the badass videos we can get.

Well I signed up for dropbox, so there's an extra 256 MB
I don't really have any videos for the youtube channel, but I'll be sure to check that out.

Lol, I think the problem has been that we have multiple channels in the past, and playlists so no one was sure where to upload their videos for 13th

I just finished installing FRAPS... I'll try it out and see if I can upload something later.

Another reason we don't use Xfire, is because we can't. Xfire still hasn't updated it's technology to support Dx11. (Which is quite sad.) But yeah. Xfire In-game doesn't work on BC2. So even if we had a choice we wouldn't be able to record w/ Xfire's software. But if you can optimize FRAPS correctly for your PC, then it's about the best next thing you can get to a HD-PVR.

Xfire works fine ingame for me, but I have FRAPS anyways. Yeah, I made the awesome jump wings, and have clips from some of the unfinished/canned projects from the golden age. I'll see about producing/editing some more videos.
So if you guys want to use my video, feel free, I'm not involved with copyright or anything...public use yo. Cept if the DMCA is asking.

Sweet, do you still have the file? I could just use a Youtube Download program, but the original is usually of higher quality. If you don't I can always go that route, but if you still have it, I would love it if you could upload it to the Dropbox, and it would be great if you could produce some more videos.
