Breaking the Skydiving record 2012 Empty
PostSubject: Breaking the Skydiving record 2012   Breaking the Skydiving record 2012 EmptyTue Oct 09, 2012 1:26 pm

I've skydived quite a few times at 13000ft/3962m. I couldn't imagine diving at this altitude...

My synopsis from everything I've read...

The last skydive record was 102000ft/310896m, about 19mi/30.6km, back in 1960 by Joseph Kittinger now 84. He fell for 0:04:36, reaching a maximum speed of 614mph/988kmh.

Today, if the weather holds up and it has already been cancelled twice, and after 7 years of prep, the record can be broken by Felix Baumgartner (43), a well-known dangerous skydiver and base jumper, of 120000ft/36576m, almost 23mi/37km up into the stratosphere.

The stratosphere is between 6mi/10km to 30mi/50km and requires a space suit to live. Joseph also needed a suit and NASA was just 2 yrs old at the time. He'll have 10 mintues to land before running out of oxgyen and estimated to fall at 700mph/1126kmh.

Here is the live feed with stats http://www.redbullstratos.com/live/

*I'll post recorded video if and when available.

It's awesome, but to me, I am not as impressed as most people are. Now days, the technology has greatly improved, than with Kittinger. To me, Kittinger had more chances of things going wrong, now days, there is so much improvements on items, that there is a slim chance of anything bad.

Same with sports, like baseball w/ homeruns, for example. Back then, it was straight homers, now they are using steroids, but everyone cheers on when they (cheat) and pass records set by the greats of yesteryear...

Those who accomplish things back in the day deserve way more credit than they have, and will ever be given.

Another cancellation for today.

I disagree Splint, it wouldn't take 7 years to plan and prep for this if it was easy. lol The technologies of yesterday might be sound but the new technologies that are giving him to ability to surpass his predecessor can fail just as easy as it was back then. Hell, even the old "sound" technology can fail just as easy.

50 years from now, technology may give the ability for someone to jump at 200k ft, but the risk of failure or death is still there.

From the sounds of it, you wouldn't be impressed with a car that went 1000 mph, or a jet going 3k mph. would you be impressed if we broke the speed of light? Yeah? But it would have been because of technology. It just shows that as our technologies get better, we can push the envelope even more.

Nah, I get what your saying, just debating the basis of why you wouldn't be impressed. And I don't think any "cheaters" should be given the acknowledgment of breaking a record. But on the other hand, could you? I mean with steriods we can break home run distances, high jumps, long jumps, weight lifting, fastest running times etc etc. Wouldn't that be the same as beefing up an engine or using better materials for a bat that sends the ball further or better sneakers, or using some new technology to make things better, stronger, faster, etc etc.

On the other side, record breakers of yesterday should always "be remembered" as they broke the record with what they had at that time. A wooden bat, instead of a composite one, a carbortator instead of fuel injectors, propeller rather then jets.

Either way, I think they should be credited just the same.

Not sure what you're correcting? 13,000 feet is the highest I've jumped at. 130,000 feet is up near the top of the stratosphere.

Heres a video of some footage from the original jump (which leads into a surfer) with some awesome background music by one of my favorite bands when I was young "dredg". Its rather artistic in combination and translation

One thing I don't like about this new jump is how commercialized it is. A cheesy green screen video to promote it. Eh, is he gonna drink a red bull before he jumps? lol

But yes, I believe technology is great in the way it advances what we as a race can do. Only thing I think that needs to be credited more is the people who develop the technology so this is possible, crunching the numbers, spending the years of research into it.

Although you have to weigh in the glory of a man risking ending his life for the simple task of jumping, I still don't believe that outweighs the glory of our handful of bright minds that modern people take for granted with their every day technology use.

Either way, I like skydiving and this wil be interesting to watch. I was waiting for when they would do this

I was pretty interested in reading up on this and on the news. Incredible how your blood could boil and what other things could go on.

From the looks of the video it seems like the guys are basically in space, right at the top of the stratosphere

Yah I just thought he was dead at that point because they said if he spun too fast the G forces could get too high.
