Well I have pretty old parts and planning to upgrade soon.. but here's what I have currently
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 at stock Current Price..: $150-$200? :S ATI/AMD 6950 TF III Current Price: Around $250 Asus P5P43TD Current Price: No idea.. probably under $100. 8gbs of some weird sketchy Kingston ValueRam Current Price: $30? OCZ EliteXStream 800w Current Price: $70-$100 on sale Antec 1100 Current Price: $90-$100
If you're planning to build.. then you can get a really good computer for under $1000. Much better than mine anyways..

this was €1665, but I got it for half a year now. I think most of these parts are cheaper now, especially since the 7 series of AMD cards have been released ( although the dual core 7990 is still not out, it's due for release in june )

You really don't need to go all out these days. It's honestly not that much cheaper to build than to buy one. I bought an HP and it works wonderfully for games, which was why I got it. I've got 2 laptops and 2 desktops. Laptops for w/e and a desk for work and one for gaming. My gaming one is as follows:
AMD A6-3620 with Radeon HD Graphics 2.20GHZ (Quad core I do believe) 8 gigs of ram and a 1 TB HDD
It's got more specs im sure but being pre-built I have no complaints with it. The only downside is lack of customization which is really all your paying for these days. I can upgrade my video card anytime which is all I need to do
